2005 Saturn L300 P0446 & P0496

Postby RRman99 » Fri Aug 28, 2015 5:06 pm

We bought out teenage son a 2005 Saturn L300 and have been working on check engine light issues. The first time we got these codes we had our mechanic look at it and they replaced the Vent Solenoid. The next time it was the Purge Solenoid but the GM part is discontinued. We found a part on rockauto.com and my husband replaced it because it was right on top of the engine. Our mechanic said to unplug the battery and that we reset it. The light came back on two weeks later. Ugh! How do we figure out the Plugged EVAP canister condition and Failed EVAP pressure sensor?

You did get the light out for @2 weeks?... may have taken 2weeks to have PCM recheck EVAP- esp if all short neighborhood trips.

First you will want to concentrate on p0496*- maybe purge is continually stuck or sticking open. OR a wiring issue purge signal wire grounding..
there should be NO vacuum flow through valve.

I did check the gas cap and happened to notice that it is not the original cap and it does not ever seal but just continues to turn and click endlessly. I purchased a new GM gas cap that is the exact one for the car. I will see if that works.

The light did go out for about 2 weeks and yes he only drives short trips around town. I will also check the purge solenoid that I just purchased and recheck all the wiring. Thanks!

kev2, I looked at all the wiring that goes into the purge solenoid and it looks fine. So far we have replaced the Vent solenoid and wiring (done by a mechanic), purge solenoid (done by us), and a new GM gas cap. The next cause in line on the ticket is "plugged EVAP canister condition". Is this talking about the charcoal canister? Should I consider replacing that?

looks ok? is there 12v - is control wire open, grounded, is there voltage on it?

Is there vacuum passing purge valve?

EVAP canister AKA charcoal canister.... I would check purge system - the system operates by -
closing vent solenoid, opening purge valve- this should put the system under a vacuum (low pressure) any leak would not allow it to pull or maintain a vacuum...

The p0496 indicates purge flow when NOT commanded- likely intermittent.
