I have a 1996 VW Golf GL 2.0 engine, manual. I am getting a code P0440 and can not seem to fix this problem. I have replaced the purge valve, and gas cap. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to fix this and also where is the caniter located on this car? Many thanks. george

GEORGE, I WOULD FIND A SHOP WHO HAS A SMOKE MACHINE AND HAVE THE EMMISION SYSTEM SMOKED.IT MIGHT COST A LITTLE TO DIAGNOISE,BUT IN THE LONG RUN IT WILL BE CHEAPER THAN REPLACING PARTS TO FIND YOUR PROBLEM.

If not figured out by now...P0440 is a "malfuction of the EVAP system" not a leak, ....Check the LDP for proper operation....your scan tool needs to run basic settings blocks 150, and 153 to test and pass...In Basics block 153 the pump should pulse (kinda thump)....if not, pump is bad or no vaccum is getting to it.....remember "MALFUCTION"/ "no VACCUM....good luck
