Check engine light came on, we determined it was a P0601 code. I purchased a rebuilt PCM from a well known national auto parts store. I provide VIN and mileage, they flashed the new PCM prior to delivery to me. After installation, I test drove the van, check engine light was off and no problems. On the second startup, the check engine light has come on again. It remains on after several additional runnings of the engine. What do I do now?

Don't have a new code yet. I spoke w/ Chrysler dealer this morning, they said it would be almost impossible to get all the correct software loaded unless you had the vehicle right there - and my software was loaded remotely based on the VIN.

Dealer also siad that if I get another P0601 code, it means there is a wiring problem and they'll have to go through circuit by circuit to identify the prob. Any thoughts?

OK, I've replaced the pcm with a rebuilt unit and I am still getting a P0601 code. I'm now told its likely a wiring problem and that someone needs to go through each of the dozens of circuits that feeds into the pcm, test each solenoid, sensor, etc, to find a short to ground, open circuit, etc that would cause this engine light to stay on. This is an older vehicle that likely requires thousands of dollars of mechanic time to find a wiring problem that isn't causing any operational problems - we just can't get the light to go off.

The van runs great and should not be exceeding emissions, but because of the engine light issue it won't pass state inspection and therefore will become undrivable on next license renewal. Am I missing something? Thanks for your input previously - do you have any further ideas??

I would try to get your rebuilder to warranty the pcm and try another one before you start anything else. The code is for the PCM failing a self test. Like I said earlier it took me three times from a rebuilder before I got a good one. And you can get a bad one from the dealer that is also rebuilt. This is not a unusual code for this vehicle and every time a PCM fixed it.

Never seen that fault on any Mopar be anything but the pcm! And I work on them all day every day! Your rebuilder is selling you junk. If your van is equipped without a skim key system then a used pcm from a van without skim will work fine! If it is equipped with skim then you'll need a new pcm and the skim code programmed with a Drb 3 scan tool used at the dealer or a high end shop that owns one!

What is a "skim key" and how do you know if you have one?

Are we talking about a specific type of key for the car or something else entirely? I've never had to do much to my van and I really don't know what a skim key actually is.
