Ours is a '99, with 42,000 total miles. When this first happened three years ago, we replaced the ignition wires, and the ignition module ($300+ part by itself). Because it was under warranty (and after sending a complaint to the Japanese Headquarters of Mazda), the catalytic converter was also replaced by the dealer (who originally "only" wanted something like $1,000 to do the job) at no charge.
Net-net, the problem went away until about 6 months ago. Not wanting to ever deal with the dealer or the corporate people again, I just ignored it. Then last week, I replaced the ignition cables, erased the codes (using my OBD-II reader, which I have NEVER have had to use on my other vehicle, a 1996 Toyota with 167,000 miles on it), and as of today, the light is still out.
So before you spend too much money, start with the cables, then work your way up. This is a fun car, and it certainly brings a smile when you drive it, but I am almost 50, and can tell you in what I have left on this earth, I do not plan to purchase another Mazda vehicle, let them learn engineering on someone else's budget.
