HELP! I have a 2000 Miata, relatively well maintained and am getting 3 ODBII errors with my check engine light. I recently had the timing belt changed, so I'm hoping these are all related to some "loose connectors"?

It's hard for me to believe that I can have BOTH O2 sensors having problems simultaneously, along with a large EVAP control leak, but I guess anything is possible. I've replaced both sensors within the last 18 months/30k miles.

Anyone have similar issues and have found a solution?

Ours is a '99, with 42,000 total miles. When this first happened three years ago, we replaced the ignition wires, and the ignition module ($300+ part by itself). Because it was under warranty (and after sending a complaint to the Japanese Headquarters of Mazda), the catalytic converter was also replaced by the dealer (who originally "only" wanted something like $1,000 to do the job) at no charge.

Net-net, the problem went away until about 6 months ago. Not wanting to ever deal with the dealer or the corporate people again, I just ignored it. Then last week, I replaced the ignition cables, erased the codes (using my OBD-II reader, which I have NEVER have had to use on my other vehicle, a 1996 Toyota with 167,000 miles on it), and as of today, the light is still out.

So before you spend too much money, start with the cables, then work your way up. This is a fun car, and it certainly brings a smile when you drive it, but I am almost 50, and can tell you in what I have left on this earth, I do not plan to purchase another Mazda vehicle, let them learn engineering on someone else's budget. Zoom zoom this!

sorry for you poor luck. Mazda's are, generally speaking, quite well engineered in my opinion. You may just need some training, say 10 years or so, before you can appreciate it.

We had a relatively humid morning, the fault light is back on. Will probably get rid of the beast at the end of summer.

Mazda is by no means a terrible car, it's just that when the other guys achieve perfection, also ran is just not good enough. Based on the experience my friends are having with Korean cars (all good, which is bad for Mazda), they will probably continue to slip.

Best of luck to all of you.

yeah, any car, no matter how well engineered, has latent difficulty under the hood.
