I have a 98 Explorer with a V8 engine and automatic transmission. I have received a P0430 fault on bank 2. The Explorer exhibits a rattle type noise which sounds like its coming from the exhaust but I can not find the source of the noise. Also it has recently started missing (perhaps backfiring) during acceleration between 35 and 50 MPH. The car has 100K miles.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Thanks much,

Randy

maybe the catalyst inside the converter has come loose and is rattling inside the converter!

Yes, it sounds like your catalyst comb has broken and is rattling around. Your code is for poor efficiency from the catalyst. However, you mentioned that your vehicle is backfiring or missing. Be aware that Backfiring can ruin a catalytic converter. The catalyst on most converters is very brittle. Get your miss troubleshooted before replacing your cat or you'll just be replacing it again

well said, probably has 1 or more bad coils that keep misfiring or the intake gaskets on it are shot as well and the lean mixture burned it out, assuming the 02(s) are good and the exhaust manifold isn't cracked allowing outside air to dilute the 02 signal, the MAF isn't gummed up from a K&N etc, etc, etc, etc, etc!!
