i have a 98 millenia that has a CEL on, tried to scan it with my harbor freight OBDII scanner, but i get a communication error. never had this problem with any other car. checked the OBDII port on the car to see if there was anything wrong there and i could not see any damage or anything. the port is clean and there is nothing visably wrong at the port.

my mechanic hooked up his snap-on scanner and that wouldn't turn on (it won't turn on if it's not getting signal from the OBD port), and tried autozone and the same thing happened. the guy at autozone said that the OBD port may be unplugged, all the wires are fine at the port but he said it could be "unplugged" somewhere else like at the ECU. as far as i know, it would just be wired directly to the ECU and shouldn't have any plugs anywhere else in between the port and ECU, so i really don't know how it would be unplugged, but it makes sense to trace the wires to see where the problem is.

anyone know where the wires go from the obd port? i mean, under the dash is a crazy mess of wires that's almost impossible to trace anywhere, so i kinda need to know where they go so i don't have to remove the entire dash to trace it.

also, i tried reading the codes by jumping terminals on the diagnostic port under the hook that the mazda techs use, according to this : http://www.mazdaworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=208&st=0&p=17569&#entry17569, but this was meant for an OBDI mx6 i think. i tried wiring up the 12v LED, but my diagnostic port doesn't have a pin for the "FEN" and "MEN", which would be the 2 pins on the extreme top left of the diagnostic port. therefore, i cannot hook up the LED as shown in the diagram. i can short it out but not hook up the LED to the "FEN" pin.

can anyone help me out here?

You probably have a blown fuse. Pin 16 on the OBD port should have power and pins 4 and 5 should be grounds. If the code readers will not power up then you have no power or ground to the DLC.

nevermind, i found it. i had 2 blown fuses and one of them fixed the communication error. i scanned the car and it no longer had the CEL on. still bogs down really hard under medium-heavy throttle, but no CELs.
