I have a 2000 Z28 Camaro that just displayed a P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (bank 1) just after I filled up with gasoline at a station I have never been to before.

Can bad gasoline, or gasoline that may have a high water content due to condensation on the inside of the stations tanks cause this error?

Bad gas or leaded gas sure could be the problem. Check out

Nissan recommends premium (91 octane) for my 2000 Maxima (85,000 miles). But what with the price of gas lately, I tried mid-grade (89 octane). Don't know if it's a coincidence, but the Check Engine light came on soon after. It was code P0420 (Cat Efficiency). Cleared the code, but now the O2 Sensor Monitor won't go Ready. Can using the wrong octane gas mess up the oxygen sensors?

the answer is yes to boh posts, stale gas can wipe out oxygen sensors which will give you those codses, some octane boosters, pour in tank fuel treatments, etc will do the same thing. Refilling the tank with premium a couple of times and driving it for a while might clear your check engine light

good luck and keep us postted
