Hi everyone! I'm working on 03 Dodge ram 2500 with a 5.7L, I have a no idle condition, the only way the vehicle will start is with the throttle push half to three quarters way open, checked the codes with a DRB3, came up with code P0172 (rich condition). Vehicle does not have a egr or maf sensor. Fuel pressure with key on engine off is 47psi at fuel rail and holding, engine running at 1200 rpm fuel pressure is 49/50 psi. Replaced throttle body, O2 sensors (only 2 on vehicle) and all fuel injectors. (new parts) Map sensor is reading fine, air charge temp sensor appears to be fine.
Any ideas or thoughts to help fix this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Mike from Michigan
What are the fuel trims like when you get it so start Mike? That's an electronic throttle body correct? Have you tried disconnecting the exhaust to confirm it's not restrictted? Are the plugs soaked with fuel? Where did you source the 02's from?
Hi Jeff! I'm sorry I don't know what fuel trims are. The throttle body is electronic and not serviceable, I have not disconnected the exhaust because of the top end performance, it does not act like a plug cat. When I checked the plugs, all showed signs of a very rich condition but not gas soaked. The O2's are mopar.
I was going to check the timing this morning, just because. Thank you for your time Jeff! Mike
Ru sure that truck doesn't have an EGR valve? I mean if you have access to a drb3 then I guess you would see it in the actuator tests. If you still have the DRB3 handy get it started, try to hold the rpms to 2500 and let me know what the fuel trims are doing. The only other thing that comes to mind right away on those trucks is they sometimes split the intake manifoild plastic and you'd get a huge vaccum leak which with an Electronic throttle assy throws it way out of whack. Pretty easy to remove it and verify. Some of those trucks had software updates for fuel trim codes but it wouldn't make it run porr just keep setting the light even when it ran fine. Yeah if you're going to tackle fuel trim codes you're going to need to learn how fuel trims work and watch them on the scanner.
Hi Jeff! After using carb clean to look for vacuum leaks in and around the manifold, I discovered a leak at # 7 injector port, took off the manifold and sure enough the intake port on the manifold is melted/burnt were the injector seats. Do you know if you can post pictures on this site for informational purposes?
Hi Jeff! Not really sure yet about the cause of the melt/burn. It kind of looks like a chemical burn to me. I work for Chrysler at the headquarters, I'm going to take it in and see if I can track down the release engineer and see what he/she thinks. I'll let you know if I find anything out! Thanks again! Mike
