Hi to everyone, hopefully someone can help me out.
My stepfather's truck recently started running terrible out of nowhere. There were no codes present before the misfires, and the truck ran fine.
I don't have a good scan tool or access to one, and I don't have a shop manual so I don't now what tests I could perform without a scanner. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor so far and no luck. I assumed the sensor went bad causing the misfires.
Truck has had little in the way of maintenance, but he said he had it tuned up once. It has 116 thousand miles.
I guess I should also mention he had an issue with the windshield leaking and causing the gem module to go haywire. There is no leak now though.
I was actually able to fix that just by cleaning a ground on the left kick panel.
thanks in advance

I just found out what the P0316 actually means. It would've made sense to me if it was the culprit, because of going from having no misfire to 3.
What a waste, thankfully it wasn't too hard.
I will try swapping coils now, and check the fuse panel for corrosion from previous water leaks.

Check/clean MAF.

Inspect all vacuum lines including the intake snorkle, PCV and hoses (especially that 90 degree elbow at the back of the throttle body) and intake manifold gaskets for cracks, holes, disconnected, etc.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Well I checked the cylinders in question.
Turns out where the spring slips over the coil spade terminal there was corrosion. I was able to eliminate all except for one misfire by cleaning.
I'm pretty sure this thing never had plugs put in it. I'm nervous about doing it, because I was told in '03 they added more threads to the cylinder heads to prevent spitting plugs this is an '02. I really don't want to have to helicoil anything, I have no idea how I could get the rear cylinders if it came to that.
thanks for the response i'll check for vacuum leaks also. I don't hear any, but i'll check.
I have maf cleaner also.

Does anyone happen to know a range for the primary and secondary resistance of the coils?
I checked a plug and they are the originals, it could just be the plugs, but I want to test the coils when I replace the plugs.

I don't know the spec off the top of my head and resistance checks are kinda of a inaccurate way to check those coils. They can have proper resistance and still misfire. Not to be gloomy but most of the time on those trucks at higher mileage and neglect, they change them all out when changing the plugs instead of always chasing random misfires on them.. They were such a problem on them that I'd recommend that. Im not a fan of Accel ignition products as a rule but they do have aftermarket coils available through Summit racing and probably Jegs as well.

Well it turns out all it needed was new plugs and like I said before a couple of the coils had corrosion on the spade terminal that the spring connects too. It was kind of a pain in the ass to change plugs, but not as bad as I thought it would be.
I agree accel coils are crap, I have read more than one case of issues with their products.
