 Post subject: 2003 Mazda Protegé5 p0171 help?

so i got my car looked at because the check engine light,comes up with "oxygen too lean bank 1" i go to the auto store and the guy asks me upstream or downstream? and i have no clue does any body know what one it would be? any help is greatly appreciated
