I have a 3.1 liter Buick Centry that has been throwing P0440 codes for quite some time. I replaced the gas cap and still nothing. Now I am finally got tired of the check engine light so I started digging into the problem. I started out tracing out the hoses to check for leaks at the PVC valve, removed and shook it around and heard the rattle so I moved on, toward the purge valve but along the way I encountered a "T" in the line that seems to enter the intake and it seemed loose. Well the bracket that holds the throttle cable has a tab on it to prevent this "T" from being removed so after I cleared the way, I noticed that this "T" has close to no resistance to being pulled out, like as in a great place to have a vacuum leak. There were three sets of little ribs that I assume are there to form a seal and one side was smashed flat. I massaged the flat ribs up and reinstalled and took a 5 mile trip and no more codes. (Usually the car throws a code within this time) Does this sound like the "T" might be the thorn in my side or should I be looking elsewhere? What would it hurt if I applied a little silicone on the barbs to get a better seal and finally is this something that happens often?
The pcv valve has nothing to do with the evaporative emissions system. it's a totally different emissions control system on your car. Check the forums for posts about Gms and dtc p0440 and check the valve that might be at the back near the fuel tank. When it's left unplugged or hoses etc it can throw that code.

The PVC, "T" and the purge solinoid all appear on the emittions sticker under the hood. The Purge solinoid as two hoses, one with a fitting that says Evap system test port and the other end goes to the "T" and then on to the PVC valve. Not at all concerned about the PVC, I was just wondering about the looseness of the part that enters the intake manifold. If I have a vacuum leak there, I would have thought that I wouldn't be able to draw a proper vacuum on the EVAP.
