Needing some help here. Been spending to much time and money on this car. Currently have roughly 60,000 miles on it. Couple of months ago I replaced all plugs, wires, and fuel filter for a generic 300 code only to have to take it to a shop and they spent 1 1/2 days before they found that a seal on the fuel pump regulator had blown out therefore causing the generic misfire code. Fuel pump regulator replaced and all was good. Last night while driving my check engine light came on again. Was having no performance issues and nothing noticable but when I hooked up the OBD Reader I got a P0172 code (Bank 1 running rich). Since I was having no noticable performance issue I took off the MAF to inspect it and the vent on the MAF was in the air filter box. So I cleaned all that out and got a new MAF and installed it. THe code remained. I was having no issues idling or starting so I gave it some gas. As I dont have a tachometer I dont know at what point point but it was more than necessary, the engine throttled done and the exhaust rumbled like a governer was in place and then would throttle back up to what I could audibly identify as the same RPM and then repeated in the throttle done and rumble in exhaust. As Times are tight I really dont want to spend any more than necesary. Any one Have any clue or similar issue??
See if you can check the Catalytic Converter. On these 3.4 engines are notorious for this issue. I have an 03 Impala 3.4 and after 115,000 still running solid, not even a single issue, is one of the best cars I ever owned. But I have an 01 Grand Am that I changed the heads because was neglected. The car had the feeling that a governor was installed, the Tach stopped right about 3500 RPMs and was the Catalytic Converter that was plugged. I bought one in Auto Zone for $180 but that is me, I can afford it. The one that you cut the old one and splice one back is about $65. Either way, you need a muffler shop to do it. I suggest the $65 one, since you are short on cash and it minimizes the risk of shearing one of the 2 studs at the manifold.
If you go to Auto Zone or have a scanner that can read real time data, you can see the RPMs generated by the engine.
Like I said before, see if you can get that checked.
