I own a 98 explorer V6 SOHC... I just recently installed a K&N short ram intake.
It does not replace the main air ram that is on there its just to get rid of the
air box... Now the problem is the codes... Ive replace PCV valve and checked all hoses.
Also checked the EGR and hoses leading to it, thats good... My friend did the carb cleaner
thing and said it was the lower intake gasket, replaced the upper and lower still came on.
Disconnected the neg. battery terminal and left it off for 3 hours... still came back on.

Now I have heard that it could be the MAF sensor I have not yet cleaned that... but my
buddy said that when he hooked it up to his computer from his work... The MAF was reading
fine...

Im all out of thoughts of what it could be can someone please tell me what else to do...

Yes the code came on after the installation... and i know it is the intake most likely causing
this problem but is there anything that I could do to get rid of the codes? Like a code override
program or something.

Will this cause any problems internally down the road or will it be safe to just keep driving it with
the aftermarket intake still installed... my buddy told me it could cause the pistons to be scorched.
Is this true?

I also have another small prob. Ive purchased this truck from my grandfather about 2 months ago
it only has 79,000 miles... It has a rough idle, this was happening before the intake problem... it will
fluctuate between 600 and 800 rpm's. Keeping in mind that I have check the hoses leading from the
PCV and the EGR. Could this be an MAF sensor problem? Or something else?

Did the problem start after that K&N thing was installed? If there are any air leaks in the tube after the MASS AIR FLOW meter then it could case this. Also if the tube is way bigger than stock that could cause problems too.

Put the stock air box back on, make sure everything's tight, clear the code, and see what happens. That way you can rule out whether it's the K&N air box that's causing the problem.
