I have the following codes: P0171, P0174 and P0442.

The car is a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 with the 4.0L V6 engine.

The only noticeable symptom is that the car has wants to stall out when it is started. I have to rev the engine to get it going most of the time. Seems like a lack of gasoline getting to the engine perhaps?

The first code to show up was the P0442. This was on for a few months and was then followed by the other two codes in addition to it.

Does anyone have some suggestions of what the root cause of the problem could be?

Thanks in advance.

- John

I'd say first check the intake manifold gaskets (two of them) for leaks. There are other things that could be causing those common but pesky p0171 and p0174 codes. I would recommend you search the forums on those two codes as they're pretty common.

The P0442 code is likely not related. More p0442 help here - http://www.obd-codes.com/p0442

Thanks for the quick reply. I've been trolling around on these forums for the last hour or so and I have found some pretty good posts about the P0171 and P0174 codes.

I apologize in advance for being a newbie...but does anyone have pictures of what I should be looking for? Sounds pretty straight-forward and I've heard horror stories about taking this type of problem to the dealer or mechanic, so I'd like to give it a go myself.

wow, I have the exact same year, make, model, and codes on my explorer sport. I initially had all 3 codes without any noticeable problems, however after a few weeks my car developed the same symptoms you describe. It would cut off right after starting unless I pressed on the gas pedal for a bit.

So I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensor with no luck. I then replaced the PCV valve and found that the hose leading from it back to the engine had a hole in it, so I replaced that as well. After doing that, the idle problem went away. The codes never cleared out, though, and now I seem to be having some problem with a long start sometimes.

I don't know if the codes are supposed to clear out automatically or not, so my current problem may just be the 442 (evap system leak), although I wonder if the 3 might be related, as my reference guide said that if the vapor management valve (it lets evaporated gas from the carbon canister back into the engine) is not working, you can experience "poor idle, stalling, and poor driveability"
