Hello,

I pulled a P0128 and after following the proper guidelines I know have to replace a cooling fan and relay on a 2001 Chevy Impala. What is the difficulty level and are there any tricks I should be aware of before I start.

Thanks for the hand.

there are 3 cooling fan relays on that, very simple to get to in the little relay/fuse box located by the right front strut tower.. cover of box should have a legend letting you know which one is what. the fans on the other hand are a little tricky getting them by the air box and top hose and such and they got some 6mm bolts in some stupid places... i have a 2000 and did all this a few weeks ago

The same code came with my Impala. What I am wondering is slush on the cooling system. If I am not mistaking there is a sensor on the Radiator and there is one on the Lower Intake Manifold. I am waiting for the Spring / Summer time to arrive to flush the system that is long over due. It has DexCool since new and is now 5 years old.

I do admit the temp rises a bit when the car is stopped, once is moving it cools down about 190F on the winter. The way my car stopped producing the code was sitting the car idle until the engine warmed up at operation temp and then drive. The only time that came up was if I start the engine when is freezing cold and start driving.

First thing to do is check the coolant level. If it is full replace the thermostant. some GM 's will turn on the the cooling fans automatically when a hard code is set. It does this to protect the engine.

Why do you want to put in a fan for this code?????? The code is for coolant temp too low for closed loop operation. You need to start by replacing the thermostat. The fans are probably on because you have a coolant related code and the pcm has commanded them on. Clear the code and see if the fans stop.
