Can anyone throw some light on a P0132, P0138 and P0172 codes for a '99 Dodge Caravan...??? Occaisionally, the engines stutters , then sudden come good. Totally intermittant. Using excessive amount of fuel too. Is it ignition problems..??

Waht engine is in your van? When it's running good are the codes still there? You have a code for each O2 sensor plus a rich fuel mixture code?
How many miles on the van, what's the condition of the O2 sesnors and the wiring to them?

Jeff!
The engine is a 6 cyl 3.3L The codes appear hard 'on' from what I can see when the car is running "normally" but I haven't been able to check it when it dies 'cause its so intermitant. The "check engine" light is hard on. The codes for both O2 sensors are up plus the 'engine rich' code.
Its done about 75K miles.

Having read other forums, it looks like the problem is either [or both] the O2 sensors.. This weekend I'll crawl under and check the voltage on both.. providing I can find them! Found 1 just aft of the Cat conv'r.

How say you??

Peter

Because your dtc is intermittent, I think you don't have an O2 sensor problem but an EGR valve problem. It's common for the vaccum modulator for the EGR to get moisture in it through the vaccum lines which then causes the diapraghm to rupture or hang open. I think your getting O2 codes because the O2 is working telling you the system is too rich or lean depending. When it's running rough disconnect the vacuum lines the egr and see if the idle smooths out. If it does you need an egr valve, if it doesn't then the tube form the bottom of the intake to the exhaust could be plugged. You can also remove the egr valve and put in a cardboard gasket that blocks off the flow and see if it cures your van, it's not a permanent fix though. It's pretty common failure on those vans, I probaly change about 1 a week.

Good luck and keep me postted,
I wouldn't chase your
O2 codes until you fix your 172

Cheers

Jeff

Actaully, what I omitted to tell you I also have a P1495 code... I guess that supports your prognosis too??... Good one.

Thanks Jeff!

I have a 99 Dodge Caravan Sport van, 3.3 L about 80K miles and I can't seem to shake the O2 codes. The engine is definitely running rich.. it smells bad...! It idles very rich (rough) for about 2 mins when its restarted hot and then all of a sudden it revs up by itself and runs smooth idle.

I have measured the O2 sensors and they appear to be ok. They fluctuate around .3 - .9 volts isolated from the wiring harness.

Also, when I increase the rpm to 2000 the engine 'hunts' up and down with fixed throttle....

ANy ideas anyone??

Huh? Why don't you start with a new post instead of dredging up an old one and let us know what you've done if anything to try and repair those codes. No O2's have been changed? No work done to it recently? Does it misfire, burn oil, down on power etc?
