IM NEW TO THIS, I USUALLY REPAIR CARS BY GOING TO LIBRARY AND GETTING A BOOK. HOWEVER THIS TIME IM STUMPED.
I HAVE A 1999 SUBARU LEGACY RT. HAND DRIVE. MY WIFE IS A SUB FOR THE POST OFFICE. A P0440 COMES UP ON
MY CODE READER. THE CAR FAILED THE EMISSIONS TEST IN OHIO. THE READINGS ARE AS FOLLOWED-

HC : (2500 RPM) = 377.8 PPM
CO : (2500 RPM) = 12.22 %

HC : (IDLE) = 1008.8
CO : (IDLE) = 13.97 %

WOW...
WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO START, I HAVE TESTED THE PRESSURE SENSOR, PRESSURE EXCHANGE SOLENOID, AND JUST
FOR KICKS THE O2 SENSOR, THEY ALL PASSED. IVE ALSO REPLACED SOME OF THE VACUUM LINES.
I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS TO TEST, THERE A LITTLE HARDER TO GET TO, OR TO RUSTY TO GET OFF. EXAMPLE THE
CANISTER, PURGE CONTROL VALVE.

Maby you can answer this, isnt the EVAP system for the gas fumes from the tank ? If so how would this make the car run so rich ? It seems that the car may run slightly richer, but the numbers I got on the E-test were 5 times higher. I did see the page and I am going to use thoes idea's to narrow things down, I figure sooner or later I'll get it fixed.

Try to check the gas cap for tightness and a good seal because if you dont then you can create a evap code leak code

Po440 is a generic code for a evap problem it does not always mean it has a leak. With the code and the readings you have I would start by looking at the evap purge valve it may not be closing this would cause all he fumes from the tank to enter the engine all the time and also check the canister and make sure it is not full of gas.

Where is the purge valve located? I have an 01 Alero and the service engine soon lighthas been on for about six months and I have had it scanned multiple times and the same OBD code keeps coming back (P0440), it went off for a couple of days after I changed the radiator hoses but it just came back on. :GRRRR. Where is the purge valve located and what else could I do for this code?

Depends on the size engine you have as far as location of purge valve. On a V6, it's attached to the rear cylinder head just below the ignition coils.

www.obd-codes.com/p0440. Check what this suggests and let us know. The canister is located near the gas tank.
