I brought my car to a local repair shop as the check engine light was on. The car was running fine until I turned a corner, the car hesitated, and the check engine light came on. I did not have any other problems with the car ie: no hesitations, stalls, etc., but brought the car in on a Saturday to be looked at as the check engine light was still on (this was three days after light came on). They found codes P0300 & P0305 when they checked for the engine codes. The following Monday morning the repair shop called and stated the engine "blew a rod" during their diagnostics and the engine was destroyed and I would need a new engine.

The reason given was there was coolant in the oil which built up pressure. We had the car towed to a dealership. The dealership did not find any coolant in the engine and said it was caused by a bad coil which the repair shop should have found based on the check engine light codes.

I'm at a loss on who/what to believe. Was it coolant or a bad coil? Can a bad coil cause the engine to "blow a rod"? I'm just at a loss on what to do as I'm being told I need a new engine with quotes of $4500 - $8000. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. :(

I call BS on a bad coil causing an engine to blow a rod and you say the dealer couldn't find any coolant in the engine,by this you mean there was no coolant in the oil? correct
Now if the piston got coolant on top of it and tried to compress it,Yes that could bend or break a rod.
Have you been having to add any coolant to the car prior to this happening?

Correct, I meant to say no coolant in the oil.

I added coolant the day I brought the car to the repair shop as the gauge was showing as hot (higher than it normally would show). Other than that day, no, I didn't need to add coolant.

Supposedly the dealership looked at the engine to trace back the cause and found there was a bad coil. My husband spoke with them but maybe since they saw a bad coil they are making the assumption this was the cause???

Yeah alot of bs there! Is the car running? is the cylinder knocking? is it a dead miss? Is the coil being powered up on that cylinder? compression reading? which size engine? You need further diagnosis done by somebody competent! Im going to keep quiet about who I think is more in this case but I will say you havent' given us enough info to condemn the engine!

No, engine is not running, has a hole in it now. Not able to drive the car and it sits at the dealer until I figure out if it's worth replacing the engine or if I just get a new car.

There was no knocking or sounds prior to bringing it in to have the check engine light checked. Just the one hesitation when I stopped at a light and then made a right turn. Light came on, car ran fine after about 30 ft. and no problems until I brought it in for the light being on.
