We have a 97 Geo metro w/1.3 P0301 code This car runs great no misfires no misses in tailpipe if we power brake we can get the light to blink .a little history new plugs / wires /cap / rotor / new rear O2 / no vacuum leaks / egr system seems to be ok / if we advance the ignition timing all the way ,the P0301 code goes away and is replaced with a P0304 instead . I have tried to set the timing between these settings and the P0301 comes right back .
This vehicle came to us with a P0113 code and a P0136 code only, both of these have been resolved ,and the P0301 came to us during the road test and now it won't go away Any help would be Great
Thanks

when the light is blinking you have a misfire one that you should feel. if you rotate the dist.and it moves to number 4 then i would check for a bad cap. were these parts installed today?

there is no misfire the engine runs smoothly with and with-out a load on it. Now I have noticed that if I shut down the engine while the light is flashing and I restart, the light still flashes while idling then stops after 15 seconds or so . and still no sign of a real misfire. If the light didn't come on and then start flashing there would be no reason to think there was a problem it runs that well.
Thanks

you may not feel it but if the light is blinking the pcm is detecting a misfire and you have a code representing that and if you rotate the dist. the only thing that changes is the cap position and the timing. like i said i would check the cap
Thank you.

The cap is new ,the clocking position is the same ,I do not believe the problem is the cap .If the ecm looks at the relationship between cam & crank sensors to creat a misfire code ,could the cam sensor be the problem ? It is part of the distributor my thought being I replaced the crank sensor and inspected the trigger wheel for damage and it made no change. I'm thinking of replacing the distributor with a good used one on Monday
Thanks

you could be correct but the only thing is that the problem didnt start untill the parts were replaced right?

Check for Plug Gaps and use the OEM type plugs. You could have an intermittent plug.
