I have been having intermittent misfire on my 2003 Passat 2.8 30V V6, as you can tell by the code. I have pulled the plugs and they appear fine. The wires have good continuity, but I'm not sure how to test the coil. Any ideas? Also, the engine light sometimes flashes under acceleration, but then stops flashing and remains on. Could this indicate a bad catalytic converter?

Thanks,

flyrodr43

First of all, you can't rely on resistance test to check plug wires. It's not reliable because as the engine warms up, opens can occur as things get hot. Secondly, the flashing MIL indicates the misfire is bad enough to damage the cat., but the cat isn't dead yet. So, STOP driving it with this misfire because if it kills the cat, you will probably not be a happy dude.
I thought those were Coil on plug, but I could be wrong, so to check the coil, just swap it with another. If themisfire code follows the coil=bad coil. If it stays with the cylinder, the coils fine. If it has wires, just replace the wires. If you're anywhere near 100,000 miles, replace the plugs too, and make sure you get recommended replacements.

Thanks a million. I'll try new wires. The car has 81K miles, but the suggested change interval on the plugs is 40K, 80K, etc. so I'll swap the plugs too.
