The "Check Engine" light came on.

Took the car to AutoZone and they retrieved codes P0440 & P1448.

What caused this?

What needs to be done/replaced? Can I do it myself? The car is 10 years old and I hate dumping lots of money into it.

How do I turn off the "Check Engine" light? My car is due for inspection this month and it will not pass if the light is on.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

P1448 and P0440 both are related to a leak in the EVAP system. From the sound of your post it's not likely you'll be able to diagnose this leak yourself. The P1448 points to a circuit malfunction in the Vent solenoid, and it's either stuck open or there's a pressure sensor problem or a handful of other possibilities. The P0440 indicates its a small leak, but you'll likely need to take it to a good shop. Evap problems are rarely easy fixes and can even require removing the fuel tank or running a smoke machine test.

Start by checking the vent valve (it is on the canister) check if is it well atached and not clugged. Also check the canister (not broken or dammaged).

But, as Darkrooms said it is better to send the car to a special garage.

I may have gotten the code defs wrong. Manufac. spec. codes are at times really tough to define.
