My Pontiac Montana engine light came on. The code stored is P0440. The mechanic said its because my fuel guage sending unit is bad, can this be true. It come up as EVAP control system if I am correct. Can someone help could it be the sending unit or something else and how should I go about correcting the problem. Thanks

Welcome!

First, does your fuel gauge read correctly?

Here's some more reading:

search.php?keywords=p0440

Wait. Is it P0440 or P1440?

Sorry typo, code is P0440. No the gauge does not work correctly When the car is started it goes to full then down to Empty. The light came on 2 days ago and it was filled up 1 day ago.

No didn't have hin fix it. I spoke to a mech friend that said he never heard of the sending unit effection the engine light or to have it part of the P0440 code. He lives out of state so he isn't able to look at it for me. Thats why I am asking here.

OK well I have to ask. Why are you concerned about the P0440 which is a relatively minor problem but you don't care that you don't know how much gas you have?

I do care about the fuel guage but don't have the money to put the new pump/sending unit in right now. The car need an inspection in 2 weeks so want the code problem fix by then. Don't want to spend money right now if I can help it. If the sending unit is the cause for the code I will have to fix it now. If its not part of the cade then I need to look else where .

Your first mechanic is correct, your "mechanic friend" is way out to lunch if he's never heard of that code and that sympton on any GM. Regardless if you don't want to fix it then why waste time? Car still runs right?

Ok so if you are saying that the bad sending unit could cause the P0440 code to appear then I will have it changed now.

yes! Gm's system uses a pressure sensor in the sending unit for the evap system so of course if it's reading wide open for example then no it won't run the monitor test and leave the light on. Montana's also have lots of issues with fuel pumps and wiring going to the back there so ou may not have a part failure but a circuit failure. Proper diag is crucial. If you're going to go with a new pump then get it as a complete assy from GM because you'll need the pressure sensor and float anyway. As well a new fuel filter is a good idea as well but again don't just shotgun the part. There's a connector that goes through the floor pan on those that runs those circuits through it and they go bad alot.
