Hey guys. I am way out of my league and looking for some help. I have a Maxda miata with a problem. Symptoms are engine running and rpms stable but no power transferred to wheels, so car starts slowing down. Then it catches, doesn't catch for a stuttering motion. Problem starts after 2-3 hrs driving, and started occuring at high speeds (80). After stopping car for 30 mins. problem does not reoccur for days/weeks (largely because car is not driven 2+ hrs often). Dealer fixed ignition coil previously but that didn't help. The just pulled codes are P0102 (MAF sensor), P0123 (TPS high), and P1771 (TPS open to transmission module). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Gresh,

Have you done any searches or reading yet? Here's a good start:
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0102
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0123
and
search.php?keywords=p0102
search.php?keywords=p0123

I would start by checking the wiring to the MAF & TPS sensors. There are more troubleshooting tips in those links I posted.

I have done some. I am requesting the dealership look at the TPS and MAF wiring, although their first thoughts are a fuel pump, which didn't make much sense to me at first impression. I had read most of the posts you linked, but thought I would start a thread because I got nothing on the Mazda specific code P1771. I'll post back where we go from here. Thanks!

I'd check the egr valve as well, very common on mazda's. Any aftermarket power adders?

I have a 2001 MX-5 that has the exact same symptoms. Run's great for a few weeks then for no reason it starts stuttering, jerking, runs rough with no or delayed throttle response (occasionally dies). Other symptoms include rooten egg smell like the cat is overheating from too much fuel mixture in the exhaust. I let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes and it cranks right up like nothing was wrong and it runs perfectly for another couple of weeks. The check engine light comes on but appears to be a soft failure, it clears out once I restart the engine and the car starts running normally. Plugs, Fuel, and Air filter are new, PCV valve checks good. No oil burn-off at all, plugs are clean.

On my Actron DTC Lookup I get the following:

P1771 = Shift Solenoid E Performance

It may explain why the TPS is acting up.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Would look at the TPS first. You have 2 codes for it. P0123 says high. 1771 can be high input depending on where you look for info. MAF code is for low input. If the computer thinks the throttle is open more than it is; it would think there is less air flow than there should be.
