I own a 2001 Saturn SL1 with a 1.9L 4 Cylinder, Automatic transmission. I recently had a scanner code come up showing P0340B camshaft position sensor circuit. In this case, it was a circuit problem solved by changing the Coolant Temperature Sensor, spark plugs and the plug wires. It had a misfire problem for three days, and an idling problem, but the car did run, albeit very poorly. It was an easy fix on a complex problem, and I am glad to tell anyone that is having the same problem that this is what I did.
- First I checked the coils for corrosion, none was present
- then I checked the plug wires, they needed to be replaced due to damage
- I replaced the spark plugs because of the engine misfiring in cylinder #4
- I changed the oil to prevent contamination of raw fuel in the oil, checked it by smelling the dip stick for the presence of fuel in the oil
- Replaced the Coolant Temperature sensor
- Disconnected the positive battery cable and let sit removed for 2 minutes to allow the engine light to clear (because I don't have a code scanner on hand at my home)
- reconnected the positive connection, started the engine and tested it by driving the car
No engine light appeared so in my situation it fixed the problem relatively cheaply.
$7.98 per set of 2 spark plugs, 4 in total ($15.98 )
$29.99 for a set of Spark plug wires ($29.99)
$20.99 for the coolant Temperature sensor ($20.99)
$24.99 for the cost of an oil change ($24.99)
for a total of $91.95... plus taxes and completed in under 2 hours. My local shop charges $70 an hour for labour, so that saved me $140 by doing it myself.
Yeah a cam sensor fault on those Saturns is very common albeit there is no cam sensor. It's there way of saying it's missing so bad it's loosing it's ability to decipher whether it's on compression or exhaust. It often ends up being coils burned down by crappy ignition wire sets and yes coolant sensors are a super common failure on those that tend to never throw a code! Lots of posts on the net on forums about this as well as professional level scan tools and sites with troubleshooter tips!
