Hello All,

My wife's care has a check engine light and a P0302 "Cylinder #2 Misfire" code. What should be the first thing I can do myself before I take it to the service dept? Is there anyway to narrow down the problem to things I can fix or replace myself. The car is a 1998 Mercury Mystique, 4cyl, automatic with 105,000 miles on it.

Thanks,
Fred

When was the last time a tune up was done?

Go back to the home page and near the bottom of the left hand column, read the article on P0302.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Problem solved. After two days the code has not come up again. I changed the plugs and wires as recommended in the forum. Her plugs were bad. The plugs were firing on gaps of up to .125. The standard gap is suppose to be .050. The number two cylinder, which is the one the code was for, was the worst. #4 plug was a pain to get out. I had to let it sit soaked in WD40 for about 20 minutes. So a new set of Autolite plugs and Belden 8mm wires and were up and running again.

Thanks for the help.

Fred
