Hi guys, My wife has a 2001 Dodge Caravan, 2.4 auto, that has been having the same Evap systems leaks for a few years, P0442, P0455, P0456. Take it to the local Dodge Dealer just before the waranty ends and they cleared the code only, came back on as soon as the waranty expired. Done with that dealer, so on to the Chrysler dealer now for the fourth time, five if you count the Dodge dealer. Its been smoke tested, had a few hoses replaced, takes several days and about $300 dollars a pop, but never lasts 6 months. This time it takes a week and they say Evap system failure and a new Pump and solenoid for $900 more. I've read the other posts and how common this is for these vans. I haven't driven it very far any time the check engine light on but could this many problems and leaks make the pump go bad cycling on and off excessively? I'll get a new gas cap and check the filler neck myself to be sure but this has gotten pretty outragious. What else can I do?

No, having more than one leak won't cause the LDP pump to cycle on and off excessively, because it runs when the PCM tells it to run, then it sets a code because it won't hold a vacuum. It's quite possible there were more htan one leak in the EVAP system and it took several tries to get themall. Ive done that before myself. However, usually, I won't charge the customer for diagnosis the second and third time, but I DO charge labor again. I charge labor again, because multiple leaks don't occur all at once. It's the customers responsibility to get the car into the shop when the MIL illuminates, not wait for two years then complain it costs so much. LDPs are very common failures, if Im not mistaken.

continuosly and repeatted overfilling of the tank can cause premature failures of the ldp but it still shouldn't cost 900 dollars for a new pump!
Are you sure the filler neck isn't leaking! First place I'd expect to see smoke on a van that old if it has a proper MOPAR gas cap on it and the hoses have been checked! It's unusual on those vans to have the po440 and the leak codes at the same time becuase normally if the switch contacts in the ldp stick you get the po440 code and then it doesn't run the leak monitor sometimes! So do you still have all 3 codes? Has the ldp been replaced yet? Darkrooms is right if the code satys gone for 6 months then it's another leak! Not the same one unless the hose they repairred is split again! LDP's, filler necks, hoses, gas caps etc are all super common failures! Im skeptical that the dealer can't fix this, unless they're being expectted to diag and fix it in 30 mins or goodwill it then in that case Im not suprised.
