I was driving home on the highway and the check engine light went on no symptoms or anything unusual. I checked the gas cap as I tanked in the morning but, this problem occured while drving home. Nothing was strange with the gas cap and it is still showing check engine. Any assistance is appreciated. thank you.

Check/clean the MAF and the wiring and connections to it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Do what MM said and if all appears okay, it's likely the MAF sensor. There's a diagnostic procedure, post back if you want it.
