I need some help. I don't know to much about cars, I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero and the service engine light came on. My brother in law checked the car and the code P0442 came up. Something about a leak of some kind. If anyone could throw some more information my way that would be great. Thank you so much.

Try posting in the correct forum for starters and then check the forums for Po442 dtcs and evap dtcs, that's what it is! pretty common!

P0442 is a leak in the Evaporative Emissions Control System. This system feeds fuel fumes back to the gas tank instead of letting them to vent into the atmosphere.

The single most common cause for codes in the range or P0440 to P0456 is improper seating of the gas cap. The gas cap is not the only failure item, but it is the most common, and the most common malady of the gas cap is that it is not installed, or not securely tightened.

P0442 is a Small Leak, this is far more often than not a result of the gas cap not being securely closed. If your gas cap clicks (ratchets) then you should make sure to ratchet it three or four times everytime you close it. If your habit is to only turn it until it resists, then it may still be loose. Turn it until if clicks, then click it a couple of extra times. I like three clicks, but I'm sure you need at least one.

@ crwlrjeff
The EVAP system doesn;t feed fumes back to the gas tank. The fumes from the fuel tank are stored in the charcoal canister and purged into the engine as the ECM sees fit. Enhanced EVAP systems also incorporate a vent solenoid that allows for pressure testing of the system.
Small leaks detected can be a gas cap, but depending on the age of the vehicle, could be EVAP hoses and it;s not at all unlikely that one of the solenoids isn;t sealing properly.

Huh? That's odd, I didn't move the post. But I did delete the second identical thread with no replies earlier today. Perhaps you moved the other post and not this one? Then I deleted the other thread and you moved this one? It doesn't really matter now 8) :P
