My Mitsubishi Montero sport has had the "service engine light" come on and off for a few years. Well, this time, it didn't pass inspection because the light won't go off. We just took it to the dealer and they said that P0421 was the code, and the B1 and B2 warm up cats aren't working. They want $3K to fix it! Does anyone have ideas on whether this is reasonable, or how I can go about getting it done for less expensive. Also, when I go online, it only links B1 to the code. Does anyone have information otherwise?

original equipment conveters can be expensive, depending on the labour to replace them I suppose it could go over 2 000 dollars! No extended warranty on it?

I'd ask them to consider splitting the bill, one party pay for the part, the other the labour, At the dealer that I work at we will do that for a good and loyal customer!

YEs, and the reason they wish to replace both banks is because the age of the other bank may be a factor. You could always ask them to replace only the bad on first and replace the other later. Also, try an independent shop. They are, at times, a little less expensive than the dealer(though not always). But it's an option if you are low on funds. Choose well, though, because you don't want to take it to the cheapest place or you could be sorry later! Cheapest is not always best.

Hey hows it going?

I have a 2000 Montero Sport LS 4x4 with 75K miles and I just got that same P0421 code that you posted about.

I was curious as to what you did to fix the problem. Did you eventually take it to the dealership?

I definitley don't want to have to dish out 3K for exhaust components. Thanks for any help and or advice!! :)
