If I accidently applied 12v constant power to my vehicle speed sensor, would I most likey 1. Short out the sensor and ruin it. or 2. Screw up the ECM? My only problem is the check engine light, and somestimes erratic shifting. My code error was P0500

Does your Spedo work?

Is that a 2-wire sensor? Check it for resistance. I don't have specific info for your sensor but a Ford focus VSS resistance is between 1000 and 1250 ohms.

Maybe PCM VSS circuit has some protection and survived your electrocution.

Yes the speedo works fine, my only problem is slight shifting problems in the transmission. My main worry is damage to the ECM

I looked up the P0500 code and here are things to check.

* Open or short in vehicle speed sensor circuit
* Vehicle speed sensor
* Combination meter
* ECM

Get it checked out, might be covered by warranty. If tranny has a minor problem now, it could turn into something that will cost few thousands.
