Hello all. Very nice forum here. My name is Brian, and I am having a problem or two with my Dodge Dakota.
1999 Dodge Dakota
4X4 AT
5.2L engine.
Right at 83K miles.

Symptoms:
I can smell the richness first.
Then the hesitation starts...big time.
Belches out black smoke under somewhat heavy throttle.
Black. Not white or gray.
The MIL will come on shortly thereafter. I reset the computer, and all is well for about 20-25 miles.

I have a P0133 code, and a 0171 code.

The oxygen sensor before the cat was replaced twice already. The original one was replaced after 82K miles or so. Six months down the road, it goes out again. Replaced under warranty. The oxygen sensor after the cat was replaced by myself because I was in a hurry, and it was around the Christmas weekend.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thx,
Brian

you likely have an exhaust leak ahead of the 02(s) or a wiring problem to the sensor! what brand of parts have you been using, I'd perform a backpressure check to be sure the converter isn't plugged!

Exhaust leak came to my mind too.
(I did some research here before I registered.)

The O2 sensor after the cat is Bosch. I don't know what brand the shop put ahead of the cat those two times.

I'll see if they can tell me.

I hope it is not a sensor wire problem.

Addendum:

When I got home, I could smell coolant. It looks like my water pump may be leaking.
(Or something by it.)

I'll look more when I can tonight and update.
