P0455 (EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large)

My check engine light has been on since Aug. Same reading every time I get my neighbor to check. We removed the error message and replaced the gas cap (not with a new one, but made sure it was tight, etc) and about a week later the light came back on.

We are moving about 250 miles north of here this week. The car seems to be running fine. I just hate spending the $ to get it fixed. I do have 4 small kids-- so I guess I would rather it fixed then stuck on the side of the road.

My van has about 78k on it right now.

Would it be cheaper to take it to the Dealership to get it fixed or a little Mom and Pop service station??

I also was told that the Serpentine belt has a few cracks in it.

My husband knows nothing about cars....I am the one that does all the research.

I hate driving around with the light on, but $ is always tight being a Military family with 4 small kids.

Any thoughts-- Should I get this fixed ASAP before we move Friday???

ALSO....

My car is no longer under warrenty. Mazda did replace the Catalytic converter about 2 months prior to this error messge (would they be connected in any way??)

If not... then I guess there is no reason to take it back to Mazda to get it fixed.

Would Firestone be able to handle this message and problem and also replace a serpentine belt??

Thanks-- I guess if I am going to get this fixed-- I need to do drop it off tonight so they can work on it tomorrow morning.

THANK YOU

Sometimes a loose or bad gas cap can set this code. Try tightening the gas cap and getting the check engine light reset. If the light comes back on then you have another problem. Some Auto Parts Stores will read codes and reset the light for free. Mike

depends on how firestone is equipped! What's wrong with diag or any work done at the dealer for that matter?
