Hi,

I have a '98 Toy. Camry that started putting out the P0402 code. I cleaned the EGR valve and the hoses/intake (almost no carbon deposit except a thin circular black ring around the opening) and cleared the code. After 4-5 engine starts, the code is back again. Got a new EGR Valve from Autozone and installed it since the MAP sensor seemed to checkout fine, the vacuum modulator filter was cleaned with compressed air. Even with the new EGR valve (these things are expensive), the code is back. What am I missing here. The hoses seem to be all in place. Except for the EGR VSV that was not checked out, I seem to have covered all the bases. Please help if you can point out something I am missing along with any experiences you might have had. Thanks.

...in my previous post. sorry for the confusion. I think it makes a world of difference between P0402 and P0401. My Camry is putting out a P0401.

check the valve and be sure when you apply vaccum to the valve the engine will stall

I had the P0401 issues two months ago, intermittent on and off. I replaceed the EGR vsv on Sep. 22 and it doesn't come on till now.

The old EGR vsv is working when I tested it. I guess the problem
is in some critical condition, it just doesn't work very good. If you don't
want to spend ~$70 for it, I suggest you remove and clean it. I don't
know if there is any lubricant or cleaner for solenoid valve. If yes, I
guess after service, it should work in these critical condition.
